Internship at The Landrovers
Custom steering wheel & instrument cluster
At the Landrovers I did an internship from the 4th of September 2023 till the 26th of January 2024. The Landrovers are based in Amsterdam and specialises in restoring and modifying old Land
Rover Defenders. The Landrovers built upon a 25-year-old Land Rover Defender chassis and restomod it with a totally custom-made exterior and interior, still using refurbished/reconditioned body parts wherever possible. They are determined to build beautiful high-end quality Defenders.
I worked on designing a custom steering wheel. Building upon a core frame, I designed an aluminum shell, drawing inspiration from classic and modern Porsche designs. The final design, featuring intricate details and a luxurious feel, consists of five unique CNC-machined parts. This project honed my CAD skills, manufacturing knowledge, and 3D printing expertise. Currently there are four cars that use the steering wheel that I designed.
I was also tasked with creating a custom instrument cluster for an electric Land Rover Defender. The client desired a classic look, removing the central infotainment screen. Using Crank software, I transferred essential functions from the screen to the instrument cluster. This involved learning Lua scripting and designing five intuitive menus, accessible via a steering column stalk. The result: a modern yet classic dashboard displaying vitals, ride height adjustment, braking control, and off-roading data.
